With the progress of society and the development of technology, people’s demand for energy is increasing. However, the existing energy is limited, and people need to constantly develop new energy sources. Solar energy is a good choice, and people are vigorously developing solar power generation. Swiss power and automation expert ABB issued a statement at its headquarters stating that it has completed its strategic retreat from the solar inverter field, divesting its solar inverter business to Italian company Fimer. The transaction was first announced in July 2019.
Current situation of ABB solar energy
In another statement on Monday, Italian buyer FIMER stated that the transfer of solar inverter assets, including the business acquired by ABB from Power One in 2013, has made FIMER the fourth largest global supplier of solar inverters.
Last year, due to declining revenue and intensified competition from Chinese competitors offering low prices, ABB proved it was reasonable to exit the solar inverter market.
Therefore, according to the terms of the transaction, ABB will actually pay up to $430 million in fees to divest the business unit. From now until 2025, three-quarters of this amount should be paid to FIMER. In addition, ABB has confirmed a spin off fee of $40 million so far.
In a statement last July, both ABB and FIMER will strive to ensure a “smooth transition” for customers and the 800 employees currently employed by the department in over 30 countries/regions.
However, as FIMER integrates it into its own solar inverter business, there are no signs of layoffs yet.
This week, ABB stated that the transaction will enable the company’s electrification business unit to primarily focus on priority growth markets. Tarak Mehta, the president of the department, described it as’ another step in our strategy ‘.
Mehta continued by saying that ABB has not completely abandoned solar energy. ABB will continue to integrate solar energy into a range of solutions for smart buildings, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging across its entire range of intelligent low and medium voltage products
Buyer FIMER commented on this transaction, stating that the acquisition of ABB subsidiary will expand its business globally. The merged business will have three manufacturing factories and two research and development centers, with an expected inverter shipment volume of over 7GW in 2020.
The Italian company also stated that it will seek to leverage ABB’s research and development capabilities to promote the development of advanced technologies related to solar inverters, blockchain, and “cutting-edge micro products”. Like microgrids, the sustained growth of distributed solar energy is expected to bring opportunities for the merged company.
FIMER CEO Filippo Carzaniga stated that the company’s “next level strategy” focuses on the development opportunities of solar photovoltaics and their “core role” in the transition to clean energy, and therefore has decided to consolidate its solar inverter business through acquisitions.
Carzaniga said, “We firmly believe that this significant expansion of our product will represent another step forward in serving all customers in all segments of the photovoltaic market and will enhance our position in an exceptionally competitive field
The CEO added, “The scale and importance of the solar energy business have grown rapidly in the past few years, and we believe this is a huge opportunity for us to create customer value and business growth. Currently, solar energy has not been better utilized by humans, and researchers need to continue to work hard to develop more efficient products in order to ensure that our human energy meets the needs of human development.
