Yesterday, ABB showcased its full range of leading smart grid solutions at the ABB Power World conference held in Beijing today, providing support for the future development of power grids in areas such as flexible grids, power generation optimization, smart homes, smart buildings, and smart production.
The two-day ABB Power World event, themed “Innovation and Cooperation,” includes a large-scale exhibition showcasing the integration of power and automation technologies, 60 technology forums, and summit themed forums covering advanced technology developments in power generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as rapidly developing fields such as smart grids and new energy.
Fang Qin, President of ABB North Asia and China, said, “Smart grids bring huge opportunities for building low-carbon transmission systems. The demand to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by reducing fossil fuel consumption means more distributed power generation, more renewable energy sources (such as wind and solar), and a two-way power grid that can receive and transmit reliable electricity
Fang Qin stated that the development of smart grids is gradual and orderly. Although there are still some smart grid technologies to be developed, ABB has been conducting research and development on many related technologies for many years. ABB’s mature technologies and products have been applied in the market.
In the 1950s, ABB was the first to invent high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology. This type of transmission technology is still evolving and is an important technology for achieving new energy access in smart grids. High voltage direct current technology is a model of ABB’s disruptive innovation, helping ABB become a leading enterprise in the global high voltage direct current market. In China, ABB has applied this technology to the construction of numerous “West East Power Transmission” projects, including the construction of three ultra-high voltage direct current transmission lines from Xiangjiaba to Shanghai, Jinping to Sunan, and Nozadu to Guangdong. Among them, the Xiangjiaba Shanghai 800 kV transmission line, which was put into use in July 2010, is the world’s first ultra-high voltage direct current transmission line and also the longest transmission distance (over 2000 kilometers) and largest transmission capacity (6400 megawatts) transmission line in the world. The other two lines are currently under construction. After completion, these three lines will provide clean electricity for 90 million people in China, and the power loss reduced by the application of advanced technologies such as ultra-high voltage direct current can meet the electricity needs of 3 million people.
For many years, improving efficiency, energy conservation, enhancing grid stability, and industrial productivity have been ABB’s research and development priorities. ABB’s R&D investment has consistently maintained steady growth, even during economic crises.
Innovation is ABB’s DNA, which is also reflected in breakthrough technologies such as Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and Lightweight High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC light). These great technologies have had a huge impact on the market and still play an important role in today’s smart grid construction, “said Fang Qin
FACTS is an AC transmission technology first used by ABB in the last century. Recently, it has been recognized as one of the 11 most important technologies of the first decade of the 21st century by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), one of the world’s largest professional associations dedicated to promoting technological progress, along with smartphones, digital cameras, and others. FACTS brings enormous energy-saving opportunities. It helps power companies achieve real-time configuration of current, maximize transmission capacity, and minimize losses. It can also facilitate the smooth integration of wind, solar, and other intermittent renewable energy sources into the grid. ABB also holds a leading position in the global FACTS market.
In order to support the development of electric vehicles, ABB has recently developed AC charging stations in China. This equipment has high safety and adopts a modular design for easy installation and use, which is also an organic component of smart homes.
ABB also collaborates with market leaders such as State Grid, PetroChina, and Sinopec on electric vehicle infrastructure projects. Among them, through cooperation with Sinopec, ABB has installed four DC fast charging stations in the “Shanghai Electric Vehicle International Demonstration City” located in Anting Town, Jiading District, Shanghai. These devices can charge 100 cars per day, and depending on the vehicle battery specifications, the charging time for each car is only 15-25 minutes.
In addition, ABB has also participated in the construction of some national smart grid demonstration projects. At the beginning of this year, ABB provided a battery energy storage solution for the wind solar energy storage and transmission demonstration project constructed by State Grid Corporation of China in Zhangjiakou, Hebei Province. This is the first new energy project in China that integrates wind power, solar photovoltaic power generation, energy storage, and transmission. After the completion of the project in 2013, the clean electricity produced by the project will be integrated into the North China Power Grid. At the same time, ABB also participated in the Beijing 110 kV Tugou Intelligent Substation project. As the main electrical supplier for the project, ABB provided project consulting, system design, and high-quality products.
ABB Group invests over $1 billion annually in research and development. According to the ABB Group’s mid-term strategy released in early November this year, the growth rate of ABB’s R&D investment from 2011 to 2015 will exceed the growth rate of sales. In China, ABB’s R&D and design team has exceeded 2000 people.
ABB’s research and development activities in China have gone through three major stages of development, from initial technology introduction to localization, to today’s creation in China. Many locally developed technologies and applications in China have also entered overseas markets through cooperation with electrical engineering contracting companies, “said Liu Qianjin, head of ABB Group’s China Research Center
