Recently, Swiss industrial giant ABB showcased over 40 innovative technological achievements at the 2nd China International Import Expo. These more than 40 innovative technological achievements involve many fields such as smart cities, smart transportation, and smart energy.
Automation, digitization, and intelligence are the major directions for the transformation of China’s manufacturing industry. In the field of intelligent manufacturing, ABB has showcased multiple leading products and technologies from Switzerland, Finland, Austria, and other regions, such as digital transmission devices used in process, discrete, and infrastructure industries, connecting frequency converters, motors, pumps, and bearings together. Through cross industry digital platforms, equipment operating time and productivity have been elevated to new heights.
In the field of smart cities, ABB showcased multiple innovative intelligent solutions, among which the ABB Ability TM mobile gas leak detection system’s detection vehicle held its first launch ceremony in China at the CIIE.
The system utilizes ABB’s leak detection algorithm, combined with gas concentration data detected by methane/ethane analyzers and spatiotemporal location information provided by China’s leading Beidou satellite navigation system, to display real-time geographic information maps with multiple gas concentrations to assess gas leak conditions. This system can be widely used in various scenarios such as gas leak detection, routine inspection of gas pipelines, pipeline hazard investigation, emergency repair, and rapid post disaster inspections.
According to Zhang Yi, Sales Director of ABB China’s Analytical Instrumentation Department, the off-axis integration cavity output spectroscopy technology used in the detection vehicle was first studied by some PhDs from Stanford University and took five years of research and development. At present, this gas leak detection vehicle can detect changes in gas concentration of one billionth (ppb level), which is 1000 times more sensitive than traditional methods. It can achieve fast and instantaneous detection of gas pipelines within a radius of 150 meters at a speed of 80-90 kilometers per hour.
In the past five years, China’s gas pipeline network has achieved rapid growth from 400000 kilometers to 800000 kilometers. However, at the same time, the safety hazards of old pipelines are becoming increasingly prominent, which puts higher demands on gas leak detection work.
The system has completed the detection and assessment of gas pipeline networks in many large domestic gas enterprises, with more than 10000 kilometers of pipelines detected, providing security services for many major events such as the China Africa Forum, the the Belt and Road Summit, the Sixth World Internet Conference, and so on.
Wang Yanyan, Deputy Secretary General of the China Satellite Navigation and Positioning Association, introduced, “We use Beidou satellite navigation for precise location services, which can accurately locate within ten centimeters. This can quickly detect where leaks have occurred and the specific location. After the inspection vehicle travels quickly on the urban pipeline network, it is equivalent to conducting a physical examination of the city’s gas pipeline network, knowing how many leakage points there are in the city, where they are located, what the level is, and how managers should investigate its risk situation
In addition to the first gas detection vehicle, the ABB artificial intelligence garbage classification workstation received the most attention during the CIIE, consisting of a dual arm collaborative robot responsible for sorting, a small robot responsible for feeding, a material conveying and intelligent tracking system, intelligent classification algorithms, and corresponding control systems.
After the feeding robot pours mixed garbage, the photo recognition system in the middle of the workstation can identify the type of garbage, and finally the dual arm collaborative robot performs garbage sorting work. The picking master system realizes precise tracking of the conveyor chain, and its operation data and equipment information can be uploaded to the cloud in real time for analysis and optimization.
Behind the whole system is the comprehensive application of cutting-edge technologies such as edge computing, deep learning, cloud computing, and robot automation. In the photo recognition system, the developed deep neural network model is accelerated with the help of Huawei’s high computing power rise chip module, which can complete the photo taking, identification, and communication of objects within 100ms, with an average detection success rate of 98%.
This solution can also be extended to similar work scenarios such as material sorting, workpiece sorting, and quality inspection in the future, to meet the application needs of discrete industries, including small and medium-sized enterprises.
ABB Group was formed in 1988 by the merger of two international companies with over 100 years of history – Swedish company Ascia and Swiss company Braunschweig. Currently, it mainly has four major businesses – electrical, industrial automation, motion control, robotics and discrete automation, as well as ABB Ability digital platform. Our business covers over 100 countries and regions worldwide, with our headquarters located in Zurich, Switzerland and listed and traded on the Zurich, Stockholm, and New York Stock Exchanges.
In 1907, ABB provided China with a steam boiler. Nowadays, ABB has comprehensive business activities such as research and development, manufacturing, sales, and engineering services in China, as well as 44 local enterprises and nearly 20000 employees. The cumulative investment in China is about 17 billion yuan, and China is currently the second largest market for ABB Group in the world.
ABB has been entering the electric vehicle charging market since 2010, providing a complete set of charging solutions for electric vehicles, electric and hybrid buses, and has provided approximately 11000 DC fast charging devices to 76 countries worldwide.
Since 2016, ABB has been collaborating with BYD and Daimler in China to provide DC charging stations for its Tengshi electric vehicles, as well as DC fast charging solutions for electric vehicle manufacturers including NIO.
